Dr Sargunan Sockalingam

Dr Sargunan Sockalingam is Head of the Rheumatology Unit at University Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC) and Associate Professor at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. He is also the current president of the Arthritis Foundation Malaysia.

After obtaining his MBBS from the Manipal Academy of Higher Education in Karnataka, India, Dr. Sargunan served as a medical officer at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia. He went on to receive his specialty training in Internal Medicine at UMMC. He remained at UMMC to teach Internal Medicine and Rheumatology, before completing his fellowship at St George Hospital, University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia. Since then, Dr. Sargunan has dedicated his career toward leading the Rheumatology unit of UMMC as the premier University clinical, research and rheumatology training center in Malaysia.

Besides intensive clinical work, Dr Sargunan’s main interest is in teaching and guiding aspiring medical professionals to reach their full potential as accomplished physicians through informative and engaging lectures. He is also active in corporate training and is currently working on developing digital healthcare platforms. Dr. Sargunan has published a number of articles in peer reviewed journals, namely Lupus and the International Journal of Rheumatic Diseases.
